
About Gianni
Gianni Scumaci has carved a unique and successful career in the worlds of salon, editorial and education. From cutting hair at 10 years old to becoming the youngest ever creative director at Vidal Sassoon, to creating the iconic ‘The Fanni’ haircut which won world wide acclaim. Gianni’s long standing collaborations with the iconic photographers Tim Walker and David Bailey, and has seen his haircuts and styling featured on the covers of British Vogue and billboards in New York’s Times square. His appointment as Vision Director for both Joico & John Frieda has made him a sort after speaker for global brands Apple and Nike, where he shared his philosophy on teaching and his creative process. This has elevated him to a unique position with in the industry.
1990's
Beginnings
Gianni Scumaci is a third generation hairdresser who grew up above the family barbershop in Lincoln. This decade saw him build his foundations as a haircutting and salon stylist.

FIRST UK SEMINAR - He was cutting hair by the age of 10 and by 14 had toured the UK performing hair seminars on stage.

1995
ACCEPTED IN TO VIDAL SASSOON - He is accepted in the prestigious House of Vidal Sassoon in London. Gianni becomes the youngest Creative Director in the company’s history.
1999
VIDAL SASSOON'S YOUNGEST CREATIVE DIRECTOR - He is responsible for the creative direction in salons and heads up the internal Sassoon Staff Training Academy. Gianni is influential in the cutting and styling of the Vidal Sassoon international campaigns.

2000’s
Fashion
In 2000’s, Gianni focuses on expanding his creative horizons and develops his skills and career journey in the worlds of Fashion, Adverting and Celebrity.

2000
THE FANNI - In 2000, Gianni created ‘The Fanni’, a haircut that had a global impact on the fashion world and dictated the look for many fashion houses. Gucci, Jill Sander and Gap utilised the new look for their shows and advertising campaigns. The haircut became a question point in the board game Trivial Pursuit.

2001
ACADEMY AWARDS - In 2001, Gianni is invited to work at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles to cut the hair for several Oscar nominees. There he stays with Vidal Sassoon for the first time.

2003
FIRST COLLABORATION WITH i-D MAGAZINE - He is the first haircutter in i-D magazine’s history to be recognised with an un-commissioned feature photographic editorial, which celebrated his unique talent for hair cutting and street casting.

2004
INNOVATIVE VISION - His innovative vision takes the art form of cutting hair to a new level outside the hairdressing industry as he begins to collaborate within fashion. This led to his haircuts being featured on magazine covers, in advertising campaigns and creative editorials.

2005
FIRST BRITISH VOGUE COVER - He is commissioned to create a haircut for a Vogue cover shoot with Vogue Fashion Director Kate Phelan, photographer Tim Walker and model Stella Tennant.

2006
FIRST GLOBAL CAMPAIGN WITH JUICY COUTURE - Gianni creates the haircuts and builds wigs for his first global advertising campaign with Juicy Couture, which is launched on giant billboards in New York City's Times Square.

2007
TIM WALKER - On set in the Hollywood Hills with photographer Tim Walker and set designer Simon Costin. He travels extensively through out the world continuing to collaborate in fashion.

2008
PATRICK DEMARCHELIER - On set in Quarzazate Morocco for his first shoot with Patrick Demarchelier.

2009
DAVID BAILEY - In 2009, Gianni is introduced to the iconic photographer David Bailey by Vogue. He has since been responsible for the haircuts and grooming on many of Bailey’s portraits and campaigns.
2010’s
Education
This decade see’s Gianni come back to the hair industry combining his Salon and Editorial skillset and vision to create his own GS brand with Education collaborating with global brands to showcase his philosophy and message on the biggest stages through out the world.

2010
SIGNED AS INTERNATIONAL VISION DIRECTOR - JOICO Laboratories, a division of Shiseido, appoints him as the International Vision Director for the beauty giant's prestigious hair care brand.

2012
FIRST BOOK - He publishes his first book showcasing his ideas and unique vision for art direction and hair.

2013
GS EDUCATION LAUNCHED - GS Education is formed and Gianni creates his inspired global Salon i-Deas concept for the hair care brand JOICO, inspiring and developing thousands of hairdressers across the world.

2014
PUBLIC SPEAKING - He is invited to share symposiums with Bella Freud and Amanda Harlech and is regularly booked internationally for his public speaking on ‘The hidden intelligence of a hairdresser’.

2015
COLLABORATES WITH APPLE - Apple invites him to be a guest speaker and share his work and creative process within their theatres across their stores.

2017
JOHN FRIEDA - The hairdressing icon John Frieda appoints Gianni as Vision Director for the brands salons writing a complete GS education program, creating an internal education team and re training the staff from senior to assistant level.

2020’s
The GS Brand
The 2020s mark the growth of The GS Brand. With expanded platforms and a growing team, the GS Heart to Hand philosophy now reaches audiences on every continent.
From the prestigious GS Academy Spaces opening in Italy to elite Hosted workshops and shows worldwide, Gianni continues to inspire. The acclaimed GS ONLiNE Academy serves professionals in over 100 countries, in English, Spanish, and Italian.

2020
GSONLiNE - Gianni launches his GS ONLiNE platform showcasing his Heart to Hand library of haircutting techniques which is currently in over 90 countries in the 3 languages of English, Spanish & Italian.

2022
THE GS ACADEMY SPACE - Gianni opened the first GS Academy Space set between the mountains in Lazio Italy where participants from all over the world visit for personalised courses.

2023
VAN MICHAEL COLLABORATION - The largest and busiest salon in the world. Van Michael Salons begin a collaboration with Gianni, who teaches their world class eduction team the GS education syllabus and philosophy, incorporating it into their own training programme and business.
